  • Prof. John Thompson is with the School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh and currently holds a personal chair in signal processing and communications He specializes in antenna array processing, efficient hardware implementation of signal processing algorithms and energy efficient wireless communications. He has published approximately 300 papers on these topics including 100 journal papers, several invited papers, and book chapters. He participates actively in the IEEE Communications Society and was elected as a Member-at-Large of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Communications Society, the second largest IEEE society, for the period 2012-2014. He is currently the overall project lead for the £1M EPSRC SERAN Project (https://seranresearchproject.wordpress.com/) which studies future wireless technologies and involves researchers from Edinburgh, Bristol and Sheffield Universities. He also leads the 3.6M Euro Marie Curie ADVANTAGE project (http://www.fp7-advantage.eu/) which trains a cohort of PhD students in the area of Smart Grid technology. He organised several events for the previous EPSRC CommNet grant and is a member of the advisory board for the current EPSRC CommNet2 project.
